Where is Montecchio Vesponi Castle?
The castle stands south of Castiglion Fiorentino town centre, near the SR71 road towards Cortona. Its hill marks the entrance to the Val di Chio and overlooks the broader Valdichiana. This setting explains its purpose: controlling routes across the countryside. If you are exploring the area between Arezzo and Cortona, the fortress adds a rural stop without taking you into a different part of Tuscany.
History: Arezzo, Florence and John Hawkwood
The fortified settlement is documented in 1014. Arezzo strengthened it during the thirteenth century. Following the Battle of Campaldino in 1289 it came within Florence’s sphere, although control continued to change. In the fourteenth century it became associated with the English mercenary captain John Hawkwood, known in Italy as Giovanni Acuto.
What you see is also the result of later restoration. After periods of decline, nineteenth-century owner Giacomo Servadio restored the complex and added battlements to the enclosing walls. It is best understood as a medieval stronghold with a long conservation history, rather than an entirely untouched thirteenth-century building.
Medieval architecture: the walls, tower and keep
The enclosing walls follow the hill for around 263 metres, while the square tower rises approximately 30 metres. Look at the way the defences fit the slope and how the tower dominates the lower wall sections. Nine small towers belonged to the historic circuit; Discover Arezzo records eight surviving today. The keep and the Casa del Giusdicente, the former judicial building, are further features inside. Their survival does not mean every area is routinely open to visitors.
What can you actually visit?
From accessible places on the approach, an exterior stop lets you appreciate the skyline of walls and tower against olive groves and farmland. Stop only where permitted and keep roads and private land clear. We have not confirmed an unrestricted walking circuit around the walls.
Access to courtyards, buildings and archaeological areas depends on organised visits. Visit Valdichiana Aretina directs enquiries to Associazione InCastro. Confirm the date, booking requirements, charge, meeting point and areas included. Do not assume that climbing the tower is possible. Without a confirmed booking or opening, plan to view the exterior and spend the rest of your day in the nearby towns.
Driving to Montecchio Vesponi Castle from Perla Toscana
From Perla Toscana in Figline e Incisa Valdarno, province of Florence, Google Maps showed 62.3 km and 54 minutes each way via the A1/E35 on 6 September 2026. This route has tolls. The starting point is the accommodation’s actual location, rather than Figline town centre. For planning, allow roughly 1 hour–1 hour 15 minutes, plus parking and the final walk.
The alternative via SR69 and SR71 was 59.7 km and 1 hour 11 minutes. These are estimates at the time of checking, not guaranteed travel times. Set your destination to the castle at Località Montecchio Vesponi 353, Castiglion Fiorentino, and check current directions before leaving.
Maps flags private or restricted roads along the route. A destination pin is not permission to drive up to the entrance: follow signs and the organiser’s instructions for parking and the final approach.
Nearby places: Castiglion Fiorentino, Cortona and Arezzo
Castiglion Fiorentino, the municipality to which Montecchio belongs, lies north of the castle. Its old town makes a natural walking and lunch stop. Cortona lies to the south-east: Google Maps showed 10.5 km and about 18 minutes via SR71 from the castle on 6 September 2026. Allow extra time for parking outside restricted areas and walking into the centre.
The castle adds military architecture and countryside to an itinerary around Cortona. Arezzo deserves a separate day if you want time for its art and streets; adding it as a fourth stop makes this outing rushed. A one-day itinerary from Figline Valdarno
Perla Toscana → Montecchio Vesponi Castle → Castiglion Fiorentino → Cortona → Perla Toscana. The three stops occupy the same part of the Arezzo Valdichiana, linked by the SR71 corridor.
- Morning: drive to the castle for an exterior stop or a confirmed guided visit. As a planning suggestion, allow 30–45 minutes for exterior views; this is not the duration of an organised tour.
- Late morning and lunch: explore Castiglion Fiorentino on foot and take a proper lunch break.
- Afternoon: continue to Cortona for the historic centre and a viewpoint. Add a museum only if opening arrangements and time permit.
- Return: check the current route to Perla Toscana and leave some flexibility before dinner.
This order involves going a little north again to Castiglion Fiorentino. If the castle visit time allows, start with the town, then visit the castle and continue to Cortona for a more direct sequence. Set aside the full day rather than treating all three as quick photo stops.
Best time to go and practical advice
We suggest spring and early autumn for combining outdoor stops with town walks. In summer, choose cooler hours and carry water and a hat; in winter, plan around shorter daylight hours. Wear stable shoes for slopes and uneven surfaces. For pushchairs or limited mobility, ask the organiser about the walk from parking and the areas included: we have not verified a step-free route. Confirm parking availability, charges and current visiting arrangements directly before travelling.
