San Galgano Abbey, a roofless Gothic church open to the Tuscan sky, and the hilltop Hermitage of Montesiepi, home to the sword in the stone, make a memorable pair. From Perla Toscana this is a genuine full-day driving excursion, not a nearby stop.
Checked on Google Maps on 27 July 2026 from Via Aretina 108 to Località San Galgano via SP540. Allow roughly 10–11 hours overall for driving, visits, lunch and breaks. Traffic, roadworks, season and stops can change journey times.

Few ruins make Gothic structure this easy to read. Tall walls, arches and empty windows frame the sky, while Montesiepi connects the architecture with the story of the knight Galgano Guidotti.
Cistercians were established in the Val di Merse by 1191. The monumental abbey was largely built between 1218 and 1288 and became influential in Siena’s economic and civic life. Its restraint and proportions reflect the order’s ideals.

Decline was gradual. By the sixteenth century the roofs and windows were deteriorating. In 1786 the bell tower collapsed onto the south transept. Abandonment and reuse of materials followed; twentieth-century conservation stabilised the roofless ruin.
Notice the long nave, Gothic arches, rose window, transept, apse, side chapels and traces of monastic buildings. Light and weather continually alter the space. The floor may be uneven or wet, so wear stable shoes.

The Romanesque rotunda was built soon after Galgano’s death in 1181. Alternating stone and brick form its distinctive bands. The adjoining chapel contains frescoes by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, so the site deserves more than a quick look at the sword.

Tradition says Galgano drove his sword into the rock when renouncing knighthood, turning it symbolically into a cross. The blade remains at the hermitage under a protective cover and should be treated as a historic devotional object.
The hermitage stands on the hill above the abbey. The connecting path is short but uphill, usually 10–15 minutes each way. Visitors with limited mobility should ask staff about the most suitable current access.
Set navigation to “Abbazia di San Galgano, Località San Galgano, Chiusdino SI”, not Chiusdino town alone. The quickest route found approaches through the Sienese countryside and SP540. Final roads are rural and winding, so keep a margin beyond the estimate.
The verified route is 93.7 km and about 1 hour 33 minutes each way, or 187.4 km return. The Florence–Siena-road alternative is about 115 km and 1 hour 39 minutes; the SP541 option is 89.5 km but slower at around 1 hour 47 minutes. Plan a full day.
Follow signs to the complex parking area and keep reserved access clear. Walk from there to the abbey and continue uphill to Montesiepi. Check current charges, event arrangements and accessible access with staff, especially in peak season.
The Foundation lists daily hours of 9:00–18:00 November–April, 9:00–19:00 in May, June, September and October, and 9:00–20:00 in July and August. Saturday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday: 9:00–19:00.

Allow 45–60 minutes for the abbey, 30–45 for Montesiepi and 20–30 for walking and slack: normally 2–2½ hours, excluding lunch or Chiusdino’s museums.
Spring and early autumn bring comfortable temperatures and soft light. In summer arrive in the morning, as the roofless nave has little shade. Rain can leave surfaces wet. Check events because concerts and ceremonies may affect access.
Use the refreshment options around San Galgano or cafés, restaurants and food shops in Chiusdino. Check opening days and book directly, especially outside summer. A simple picnic is another option where permitted; take all litter away.
Chiusdino is the most coherent addition; its two museums appear in official combined tickets. Monticiano and Val di Merse are also nearby. Siena only works with an early start and selective sightseeing; for most visitors it crowds the day.

After roughly 187 km of driving, avoid unnecessary evening detours.
