Where Lake Trasimeno is and why visit

Lake Trasimeno lies in Umbria, near the Tuscan border. Its regional park covers more than 13,000 hectares and includes Isola Maggiore, Isola Polvese and Isola Minore.

Visit for fortified villages, wetlands, easy waterfront walks, freshwater-fish cuisine and island ferries. In one day, choose two places and one island.

Castiglione del Lago

Castiglione del Lago is the natural first stop from Tuscany. Visit Palazzo della Corgna and Rocca del Leone, then explore the old town and waterfront. Arrive early in summer for easier parking and enough time for a ferry.

Passignano sul Trasimeno and the lake

Passignano, Tuoro and San Feliciano

Passignano is ideal for a waterfront walk and ferries to Isola Maggiore. Tuoro adds the history of Hannibal’s Battle of Lake Trasimeno and the Punta Navaccia departure point. San Feliciano is known for its Fishing Museum, harbour and sunsets.

Isola Maggiore and Isola Minore in Lake Trasimeno

Isola Maggiore and Isola Polvese

Isola Maggiore is the lake’s only permanently inhabited island. Allow two to three hours for the village, churches, Lace Museum and paths.

Isola Polvese is a nature park with a castle and Pietro Porcinai’s Aquatic Plants Garden. As of 31 July 2026, the San Feliciano crossing is temporarily suspended: confirm service resumption before travelling.

How Lake Trasimeno ferries work

Seasonal Busitalia services link Castiglione del Lago, Passignano and Tuoro–Punta Navaccia with Isola Maggiore. Timetables change through the year. In 2026 a €3 landing contribution is added for Isola Maggiore; indicative return totals are €10.30 from Passignano, €9 from Tuoro and €11.10 from Castiglione.

Check fares, capacity and the final return sailing on the official website the day before and again that morning.

Beaches, children and local food

Use only designated bathing areas and check regional monitoring and local signs. Families can combine a ferry, waterfront walk, Fishing Museum and Oasi La Valle nature reserve.

Local dishes include tegamaccio fish stew, carp cooked “in porchetta”, perch and seasonal tench or eel. Confirm restaurant opening days outside summer.

A two-day itinerary and Cortona

Day 1: Castiglione del Lago, Isola Maggiore and sunset. Day 2: Tuoro, Passignano, San Feliciano and the Fishing Museum.

Cortona combines well with the western shore across two separate days. With only one day, visit Cortona in the morning and Castiglione in the afternoon, skipping the island.

Perla Toscana is in Figline e Incisa Valdarno, not on the lake. Follow the A1/E35 south and continue from the Valdichiana area towards Castiglione del Lago. Use marked parking outside historic-centre ZTL zones; signs and current municipal rules always take precedence.

Where to stay for Tuscany and Umbria

Perla Toscana can be a welcoming base for alternating Florence, Chianti, Cortona and Lake Trasimeno. The lake needs a dedicated day, but families and groups can return to the same house with a kitchen, shared living space and private parking.
