Bagni San Filippo is part of Castiglione d’Orcia on Monte Amiata’s eastern slopes. Mineral-rich water deposits calcium carbonate, forming white cascades and natural pools in the forest.
Fosso Bianco is the thermal stream. The regional tourism authority says entry is permitted only from Via San Filippo, towards Podere Rovinati. The first pools are roughly five minutes from the entrance; lower pools require a steeper walk over mud, roots and wet limestone.

The White Whale is a large limestone deposit named for its whale-mouth shape. Its white surface forms as calcium carbonate precipitates from the thermal water. It is extremely fragile: official guidance says not to touch it, walk on it or bathe beside it.
Yes: access to the Fosso Bianco natural area is free. There are no changing rooms, lockers, showers or lifeguards. A separate private thermal complex exists in the village, but a complete and reliable 2026 price list was not available during our check; contact the operator before travelling for paid facilities.

Regional visitor information mentions spaces along SP61 and at Via Fosso Bianco 3. Some parking is paid, but we could not verify a stable municipal 2026 tariff: read the signs and meter on arrival. Never park on the carriageway or block private access.
The first pools are about five minutes from the Via San Filippo entrance. Allow 10–20 minutes to lower areas depending on parking and conditions. The sloping, uneven trail is not step-free or wheelchair accessible.

Choose Bagni San Filippo for a woodland trail and free natural pools. Choose Bagno Vignoni for its historic village and easier services; bathing is forbidden in the monumental Piazza delle Sorgenti pool, so use authorised spas.
Bagni San Filippo is smaller, wooded and closer to Val d’Orcia. Saturnia’s Cascate del Mulino are broader and the resort offering is larger. They are roughly 55–60 km and at least one hour apart by car.
Morning: Fosso Bianco before crowds. Lunch: village or Castiglione d’Orcia. Afternoon: choose Pienza or Castiglione, then a short Bagno Vignoni stop. Reduce stops in winter.
From Perla Toscana in Figline e Incisa Valdarno, plan approximately 120 km and 1 hr 45 min–2 hr each way, normally via Val di Chiana and the Chiusi/Chianciano area. Live routes vary, so recheck on departure day. Leave by 7:30–8:00 and add no more than Pienza and Bagno Vignoni.
